Hawaii Sharks

The Department of Land and Natural Resources

The site provides a wealth of information about sharks: their role in Hawaiian culture, descriptions of all sharks (and their relatives) found in Hawaiian waters, basics of shark biology, shark safety, and data on shark bite incidents. Find information about sharks in Hawaii.
KidScience KidScience, produced by the Hawaii Department of Education and Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) with support through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, award no. R203A970016, is an interactive distance learning science program for students in grades 5-8. Students have the opportunity to take electronic field trips, interact with scientists, and participate in hands-on science lessons. KidScience lessons are delivered live or taped into the classroom via television. Teachers' guides, providing background information and student activities, accompany the lessons. Waikiki Aquarium Our exhibits, programs, and research focus on the aquatic life of Hawaii and the tropical Pacific. Over 2,500 organisms in our exhibits represent more than 420 species of aquatic animals and plants. Every year, roughly 350,000 people visit the Waikiki Aquarium.

The Waikiki Aquarium has been designated as the Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center for the Pacific Island Region of the Coastal America Partnership.

NOAA's Ocean Explorer Educators and scientists working with NOAA during October 2002 developed a series of lesson plans for students in Grades 5 – 12 that are specifically tied to the Northwestern Hawaiian Island Expedition. These lesson plans focus on cutting-edge ocean exploration and research, using state-of-the-art technology, aboard University of Hawaii’s research vessel Kilo Moana. Download lesson plans
Introduced Marine Species of Hawaii: Bishop Museum and University of Hawaii This brief guide was assembled to provide information concerning some of the most common marine alien species to people who spend time in the coastal waters of Hawaii. Some of the more recent discoveries of alien species have been made by photographers and aquarium collectors. It is hoped that when individuals observe animals not previously seen, they will bring them to the attention of the appropriate people. This guidebook is by no means comprehensive. reefED - The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Reef ED is a multimedia education program prepared by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority for educators and students.

Coral Reef Resource Guide This manual is a compilation of some of the finest teaching activities available on coral reefs, gathered from around the globe. Teachers will find exercises and projects for students in grades four through eight which can be integrated into all disciplines of learning—reading, writing, math, science, social studies, arts, drama, recreation—and even classroom refreshments. Some of the activities are simple and can be quickly conducted while others will require more extensive preparation and time to perform. The text of many activities in this teacher’s guide is written for classroom instructors, however, some activities address students directly. Download Resource Guide
