Alien Algae Cleanup at Hilton Hawaiian Village

Time: 7:00am - 12:00am

Alien Algae Cleanup Event
on January 24th, 2004

7:00 am -12 Noon
at the rear of the Hilton Hawaiian Village

Aloha Everyone!

First, We'd like to apologize for the late notice, but we need your help! You have done a tremendous job thus far in removing over 35 tons of the alien limu Gracilaria salicornia from the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District. But it is important to keep up the effort!

This is an especially unique opportunity, as we will be attempting to completely eradicate a resident population of G. salicornia in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikiki. We hope you can come down on Saturday morning, January 24th to help preserve our unique ocean life, and spend a fun morning on the beach!

Since this is going to be a new site for us, there are some different elements of which we should be aware. First, The Hilton has graciously reduced the validated parking in their garage to $3.00 for us. However naturally, carpooling or alternative ways to get to the removal site will be the most cost effective. Secondly, the removal process, may be slightly modified to reflect the new setting, but as usual we will all be briefed in the morning before we begin.

And remember: If you plan on helping in the water, please be sure to bring you own snorkeling gear. Also, please wear 'reef walkers' or old tennis shoes for foot protection. And don't forget a hat and some sunscreen!

Volunteers will once again be supplied with a light breakfast and lunch. In addition, we will provide a gift to all of our participants. Please contact Eric Co at The Nature Conservancy (537-4508 ext. 270, or preferably eco@tnc.org) by Wednesday, January 21st so we can make sure we have enough goodies for all. Please spread the word and we hope to see you again!

*And if you know anyone else who hasn’t received this email, please don’t hesitate to forward this on!

As always, you are the ones who are making a difference in preserving Hawaii ' s natural resources!

"What's New in Microbial Methods at the Office of Water in EPA"
    Time: 2:00pm
Location: State Laboratory Division Auditorium

DATE: September 23, 2004, Thursday
TIME: 2:00 PM
PLACE: State Laboratory Division Auditorium
Department of Health
2725 Waimano Home Road
Pearl City, HI 96782

Sponsored by:
State Laboratories Division, Hawaii State Dept. of Health
and Water Resources Research Center, University of Hawaii

By Dr. Robin Oshiro, Ph.D.
Microbiologist, Alternate Test Procedure Program Coordinator
Office of Water, Office of Science and Technology
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Washington, D.C.

To analyze environmental samples (drinking water, wastewater, storm water, streams, sludge, reclaimed water, soil, sediments, air, fish) for most contaminants, EPA approved methods are required to meet EPA regulations.

This requirement often results in the following questions. 1) Why was a particular method approved by EPA and not another method? 2) What can we do when the EPA approved method is not as good or does not work for samples in my area? 3) Why doesn't EPA have a method for a specific contaminant of concern and what do we do under that situation? 4) How can we get EPA to approve a method that works in our lab? 5) Why hasn't EPA taken the lead and approved the many molecular genetic tests that are reported to be so sensitive?

These questions, the processes that are used by EPA to establish USEPA approved tests, as well as new directions in the Office of Water will be discussed by the speaker.

Dr. Oshiro has been working for EPA during the past 8 years and is very knowledgeable about methods development and the concerns of state and county agencies. Besides providing insightful information, she will transmit your concerns to the EPA Office of Water. The speaker was a graduate student at the University of Hawaii, and evaluated many different methods to measure the bacterial quality of water and sand at most of the beaches on Oahu. Thus, she is very knowledgeable about the problems of water quality for the state of Hawaii.

This film about genetically modified food could have been tough sledding for regular folks to sit through, but this film is an engaging and lucid presentation of not only the science of genetic engineering, but of the people and the politics behind what looks to be a pitched battle to control the global food supply. Deborah Koons Garcia, a long-time documentary filmmaker (and wife of the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia), spent the past three years writing, directing this eye-opening look at the genetic engineering (and marketing) of the food we take for granted.

  Second World Water Monitoring Day
From Sept. 18 to Oct. 18, people around the world will be taking to their local waters to sample water quality and post their data as part of World Water Monitoring Day events. Monitoring activities and events will culminate on World Water Monitoring Day, Oct. 18, 2004-- which is the 32 anniversary of the Clean Water Act. EPA is partnering with America’s Clean Water Foundation and others to encourage participants to use a simple test kit to take water quality samples of local streams, lakes bays or wetlands, enter their data into an international database, and take part in activities that educate us all about our role in protecting clean water. For more information on ordering water test kits and to register your monitoring location, visit http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org.

If you plan on helping in the water, please be sure to bring you own snorkeling gear. Also, please wear 'reef walkers' or old tennis shoes for foot protection. And don't forget a hat and some sunscreen!

Please contact Signe Opheim to help out or for more details (779-2616, or opheim@hawaii.edu) by Wednesday, Oct. 20.

  Learning to Sea
December 3rd: 6 pm and 8:15 pm, December 5th: 5 pm. Presented in the University of Hawaii Architecture Auditorium on University Avenue. $5
PARKING IS FREE ON SUNDAY IN LOT ADJACENT TO ARCHITECTURE AUDITORIUM (on University Ave, just South of Maile Way). Underwater photographer Ziggy Livnat divides his time between two homes--on the shores of the Red Sea and on the Big Island. For this film he took a video camera under water, to show us this amazing world. Using gorgeous cinematography and split-screen techniques, Livnat illustrates the fascinating variety of undersea life, and the way that species diverge from one another in different environments. Of particular interest are the octopuses, able to change size, shape and color in the blink of an eye; and walking fish - including one never before seen on camera. Narrated by Martin Sheen.
