  Sanctuary Ocean Count
Times, Location, Contact, Etc.: VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Ocean Count has become a highly anticipated annual event. The Sanctuary Ocean Count project involves counting the number of whales that can be seen around the islands over a four-hour period, and recording their behavior. This year, the Sanctuary Ocean Count will be conducted at 65 different shore sites around O`ahu, Kaua`i, and the Big Island. Counts will be conducted the last Saturday of January, February, and March. The count enables the Sanctuary to look at whale population and distribution and behavioral trends at different shore sites over the course of the whale season and will also allow volunteers to learn more about humpback whales. The Sanctuary can use your help in other ways as well! Site Leaders are an essential part of the Sanctuary Ocean Count. Site Leaders help to organize the volunteers at their site, act as the point of contact for the site, and ensure that the data collection for whale sightings and behaviors is carefully maintained. Due to the importance of this responsibility, Site Leaders must be available to participate in all three of the counts and must attend training. If you would like to volunteer as a site leader, please contact the appropriate Sanctuary Office. For their efforts, Site Leaders will receive a free Sanctuary Ocean Count t-shirt. General volunteers will be able to purchase a Sanctuary Ocean Count t-shirt from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
To register as a general volunteer for one of these dates, call:
